Both oral surgery and modern dentistry use sedation to prevent the patient from either feeling pain or allow the patient to remain still for complex surgical procedures.
At Union Mill Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center we want to provide the best care for each patient and that starts with them feeling comfortable with us.
Sedation Services
Sedation is the act of inducing a state of calmness or sleep and it is widely used in dentistry to help ease anxious patients, numb pain, and provide sleep for surgery. There are multiple levels of sedation offered depending on the circumstance at hand.
Local and Topical Anesthesia (Numbs Pain)
If you have visited the dentist, you are probably familiar with local and/or topical anesthesia. Local anesthesia is injected into the area where a procedure will be performed to eliminate pain by blocking the pain signals in the nerves. There are times where topical anesthesia is applied before injecting local anesthesia to have the sedative effects applied over a wider area.
Nitrous Oxide/Laughing Gas (Provides a Light Calming Sensation)
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through the nose and the mouth - quickly providing a sensation of calmness and happiness. For patients who are nervous, this works wonders to make their visit a better experience.
IV Sedation (Provides a Deep State Of Calmness)
In some ways, IV sedation is the next step in the evolution of sedation and places patients into a relaxed and comfortable state. It can be described as somewhere between being asleep and awake - in fact, patients have trouble recollecting their visit after they leave.
Many patients choose IV sedation for wisdom tooth removal and other procedures that they just don't want to be fully aware of. The anesthesia will wear off over the course of 24 hours and the patient will feel extremely drowsy when leaving the office, which is why we ask that they have someone to take them home.
General Anesthesia (Induces Sleep)
Inpatient general anesthesia is used throughout the medical field when performing complex surgery. It is used for oral surgery procedures that require the patient to be unconscious to safely complete the process - orthognathic (jaw) surgery for example. And similar to IV sedation, patients will feel groggy after the procedure is finished.
Why Are Some People Nervous About Dentistry?
Sometimes, patients just don't want to experience anything associated with the procedure they are going to undergo.
It is perfectly understandable, which is why we make sure to work with each patient to have them feel as comfortable as possible.
Because we are an oral surgery clinic, we take care of the bigger surgical procedures that can have a patient feel especially nervous.
At Union Mill Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center we simply want to ensure that each patient gets the care they need while feeling comfortable with us in a welcoming environment - we believe this is especially important to cement trust.
