Implants are considered the most optimal prosthetic tooth option. Because they are planted in the jawbone, they will have the best support possible in your mouth. However, traditional dental implants can be considered quite costly and dentures - while functional - won't provide the experience dental implants can. At Union Mill Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center we are happy to say there is a middle ground between dentures and implants in the form of implant-supported dentures.
How Implant Supported Dentures Can Help You
Implant-supported dentures are what the name implies, they are dentures that are held by surgically planted dental implants. The most common varieties will allow the user to snap the dentures on and off at will, but they can also be permanently fixated on the implants. They provide the stability of implants mixed with the cost benefits of dentures. Here are the different types of implant-supported dentures we have available for patients.
Locator-Attached Implants
When someone thinks of implant dentures, there is a good chance this is what comes to mind. Locator-attached implants require two or more implants to be spaced apart to hold the dentures in place. They are one of the more popular types of implant dentures due to their cost benefits.
Bar Attachment Dentures
Bar Attachment dentures can be said to be a sturdier form of locator implants. Instead of just having the abutment points to support the dentures, there is a metal bar that runs between each support point. This provides a sturdier foundation to prevent flexing. These dentures can also be removed by the user.
Screw Retained Dentures
Screw retained dentures will provide the most natural-feeling experience because they are the most secure. These are non-removable but because more implants are used, there is practically no shifting or flexing. You may be wondering what the difference is between these types of dentures versus traditional dentures which are also permanent. The simplest answer would be that dentures go over your gums while the prosthetic teeth on implants go on top. This ultimately does affect the potential longevity, but they are still a viable option, nonetheless.
Are Implant-supported Dentures Worth It?
The cost benefits of implant dentures can be quite large over traditional implants while providing a similar feel. Implant dentures can end up being ten or twenty thousand dollars less which makes them an enticing option. There is a concern of the longevity of dentures vs implants, but that is ultimately up to what you feel is in your best interest. To sum it up: implant-retained dentures cost less upfront, but likely need more frequent replacing, while traditional implants can last much longer but have a much larger upfront cost. There isn’t a one size fits all for everyone which is why it is good to talk with us about what option might be best for you.
