A Brief History of Dental Implant Technology

Before the invention of dental implants, teeth replacements were mostly cosmetic in nature and didn't alleviate the major problems caused by missing teeth: jawbone loss. When a person loses their teeth, their jawbone no longer receives stimuli from the teeth, and that causes the body to gradually resorb the bone.

At the time, one of the best solutions for patients used to be dentures, but they came with their own set of problems. For one, dentures were temporary, expensive, and did not restore complete oral functionality in patients. This means patients still had to watch what they ate and had a rather restricted diet to maximize the lifespan of their dentures.

One could argue that dental implants saved patients from the grim fate that awaited them upon losing their teeth. Unlike dentures, dental implants are composed of three parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the prosthesis. The implant is drilled deep into the jawbone itself, which helps simulate the presence of real teeth.

This means that dental implants prevent you from losing your jawbone mass, which is extremely important in the context of facial aesthetics, oral functionality, and preservation of your remaining teeth.

Without dental implants, your jawbone may continue to lose its density, which will weaken your remaining teeth. Of course, the dental implant procedure itself requires the presence of a healthy jawbone mass, usually done with the help of a bone graft.

Dental Implant Services From Your Mt. Laurel Oral Surgeon

Full Mouth Reconstruction

For some patients, a full mouth reconstruction surgery may be the way to go if they want to completely change how their mouth looks. By working with an expert oral surgeon, you can fine-tune the size, shape, position, and color of your teeth. Full mouth reconstruction may also involve the use of a bone graft in the case of patients who may have experienced significant jawbone atrophy.

The result is a dramatic boost in your self-esteem and confidence. With that said, different people will have different results and experiences. Moreover, based on their specific goals, the costs for full mouth reconstruction may be vastly different and depend on various factors such as the following:
•  The number of teeth you want to replace
•  Whether you want to maintain your natural teeth or make changes to them
•  How much bone loss you have experienced
•  Type of anesthesia you choose (general anesthesia is more expensive)

Single Tooth Implants

Patients who have experienced the loss of a single tooth can opt for single tooth implants. As described earlier, the implant will consist of the implant post, abutment, and a prosthesis. It is recommended to get single tooth implants as soon as possible to prevent the loss of jawbone density so that the oral surgery for the procedure can start right away.

Multiple Teeth Replacement

Patients who have lost multiple teeth have several options. They can either have all of their missing teeth fixed with the help of dental implants or choose alternatives such as an .

An implant-retained bridge is supported by dental implants. In most cases, Dr. Jaffery will insert two or more dental implants into the jawbone and attach a bridge of artificial teeth to it. This method is possible because a single dental implant can support up to three teeth.

Implant-supported dentures, or overtures, are ideal for patients who need more than two teeth replaced. Having multiple dental implants can increase the time it takes for the mouth to fully heal. Hence, many patients opt for overdentures.

All on X

All on X refers to a dental bridge that is anchored by four or more implants in the upper or lower teeth. The "X" is a reference to the number of implants, which in most cases can be as low as four or as much as eight. The main advantage of All on X dental implants is that they can last for a significantly longer time compared to dentures and other alternatives.

Immediate Dental Implants

As the term suggests, immediate dental implants are inserted immediately after the extraction of a tooth and are covered with a temporary crown until the mouth heals. This is in stark contrast to regular dental implants, where the patient may have to wait up to three months (or more) for their mouth to heal before any final restoration is attached.

Immediate dental implants are only possible if the bone around the missing tooth is intact and the surrounding tissue is in good health.

Leukocytic Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF)

In some cases, dental implants can take a long time to heal, which can be a source of inconvenience to patients. To accelerate healing time, our oral surgeon may use Leukocytic Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) to maximize the body's own healing process. This technique is mostly utilized in bone grafting procedures to reduce the time it takes for dental implant placement.

Ridge Augmentation

The loss of teeth and jawbone may cause issues with facial appearance. In order to restore the natural contour of the jaw and gums, some patients may be recommended ridge augmentation. It is very similar to bone grafting, with the exception that our dentist also pays attention to the form and shape of the jawbone to achieve its desired form.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Wondering if you're a candidate for dental implants? Most people of all ages, with the exception of children, are good candidates for dental implants. However, some patients may have existing medical conditions and gum disease that could prevent them from having the procedure.
